The Beast Within

In 1988, INXS's Kick was charting. I played that tape in my little boom box until it warped.

But I have to say that I was a little surprised when one of the songs came up in catechism one Sunday morning. There I sat, preparing for my confirmation into the Catholic Church. When our teacher decided to attack this band, and the music I loved so much at the time.

"’The Devil Inside’ is a blasphemous song! And if you listen to it, you're inviting the devil into your heart!"

That was the moment  I knew that I would never be a practicing Catholic.

Not just because she attacked my music. Which of course just made me love it even more. It was because even at that age, I knew that the world wasn't that simple. Human beings certainly weren't.

Somewhere in me, I knew there was a deeper truth to those lyrics. And it felt good to acknowledge it.

The devil inside. The devil inside. Every single one of us. The devil inside.

I can see why this set her off.

It's scary to think that there is a part of us that goes against every moral fiber we hold. That lives inside of us as a shadow.

It's safer to repress it. Most people don't have the self-awareness, or — more often — the self-compassion to meet those parts of themselves.

And so the shadow grows.

When you stuff it in a corner, pretend it doesn't exist, it doesn't disappear. It just goes into hiding and pulls the puppet strings without you realizing it. Your choices. Your reactions. Your relationships. All of it being driven from some shadowy corner you refuse to explore.

Every full moon, people get weird. It's a documented thing. Look into it if you want. Increases in ER visits. Spikes in reported crime. Ask anyone who works in a hospital or law enforcement. They'll tell you.

Some people blame it on the moon.

The truth is a little more humbling.

The high energy of the full moon isn't doing anything other than bringing to the surface what is already living inside you. Not to bait you into bad decisions or frantic anxiety.

It's a self-cleaning system. Like a fever that burns out a virus. The full moon pumps up the volume on what's been simmering…

The resentment, the anxiety, the grief you've been managing, the frustration you've been swallowing.

The high energy makes it loud enough to finally be heard above the background noise of life.

This isn’t dysfunction. It’s the system working.

Werewolves are a perfect personification of this. Transforming into a beast. Howling at the moon. Raging. But the beast was always there, just waiting to come out. The moon didn't create it. It just unlocked the cage.

Terrifying.

And yet...

Those scary parts of ourselves are the ones we hide. The ones we hate. The ones we harass endlessly, trying to fix, control, conquer or cut away.

What the beast really needs is love. Care and attention.

Not because those nasty parts are right or justified. But because what you refuse to look at doesn't dissolve. It goes to ground and pulls the strings from the shadows — your choices, your reactions, your relationships — without you ever realizing it.

This is why anger is so often followed by deep sadness as you wonder, "Where did all of that come from."

It’s no secret. It was there all along. Hanging out with its friends, fear, insecurity, jealousy, resentment and a host of others. Maybe they’re listening to INXS when they’re not on the clock, waiting for the perfect moment to sucker punch you.

The truth is that anyone who believes they have no capacity for violence or malice, has not spent much time looking at themselves honestly. They’re too afraid of the real answer. Human beings — whole human beings, not the curated theatrical cut — are living polarities.

All of it belongs. The light and the shadow both.

The beast doesn't need to be conquered. It just can't be put in charge.

And the only way to lose it is to bring it into the light. To love the unlovable parts of ourselves until they feel safe enough to let go and return to wholeness.

That's what this full moon is for.

Not to fix anything. Or to figure it out. Just to let it surface, and meet it with honesty instead of resistance.

The sound healing will take you under the surface level noise. Beyond the story you've been telling yourself about these parts to create a space for them to move through you and release.

Lie down. Close your eyes. Let the bowls do what words can't.

All of it is welcome here.

Peace,

Nick
